An Afghan woman, Fakhria Ibrahimi Momtaz developed a “yoga application” which has made its way to the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) competition in the US.
“I have a yoga club and a technology company and I wanted to create something useful for both. So I designed the yoga software which is working in Dari and Pashto languages,” according to a report by Tolo News.
The GIST Tech-I Competition is an annual pitch competition for science and technology entrepreneurs from emerging economies worldwide.
Aspiring innovators from over 135 emerging economies present their ideas and startups online which are subsequently reviewed by experts before allowing them to enter a global public poll to select the best entrepreneurs who participated in the Tech-I-finals.
The Global Innovation through Science and Technology is a program developed by the US government on innovation and entrepreneurship to assist and support business people to set up start-ups.
GIST offers participants to “develop skills, build networks, find mentors, and access financing through a combination of in-country training, a pitch competition, interactive online programming, and direct connections to US experts.”
Momtaz’s application has made it to the semi-finals of the competition. She said her application is among the 80 chosen out of at least 500 designs registered at the GIST.
“So far, we have managed to make our way to the semi-finals, but after this, we need people’s votes through the online system,” she said.
“The voting is online. People can create accounts on GIST website and then click on our video account which has my name (Fakhria Ibrahimi Momtaz). People can vote once in every 24 hours up to the first of March,” added Momtaz.
